What are kids doing at your school?
Navajo Elementary School
Story submitted by 4th grade Navajo teacher
Bonnie Miller.
Two years ago, and each year since, we have taught the entire school the Six
Pillar Shuffle... making words fit our school. We have a CD we play with the
music and we taught the whole school the words and the motions.
- Twist is for Trustworthiness
- Roll is for Respect
- Reach up for Responsibility
- Spread our arms for Caring
- Flap our arms for Fairness
- Stomp our feet for Citizenship
The Six Pillar Shuffle .... is a kick !
- We have motions to the song and we try to do
it at every spirit assembly! It is a blast.
We also have a few other songs we have taught the school and sing with motions
to them at assemblies, to promote Char. Counts.
- Also, our custodian has arranged to have the
columns (pillars) in our hallway painted the colors of the Six pillars and
stenciled the words on them. It is awesome and a great reminder as the
students walk through the halls.
- We have a bulletin board set up in our main
hallway that has balloons the colors of the Pillars and the words - Titled
Kids for Character. I used the same pattern I have seen on the main Character
Counts Web Site.
- We have posted the Pillar words in our
cafeteria on the pillars, too.
- Recently, our Art teacher, with an
Artist-In-Residence, had our students paint murals in our cafeteria and office
wall with students/scenery representing the Character Counts Traits. It is
colorful and beautiful!!
- Our teachers make it a point to use the
Character Counts traits as their class rules and we integrate lessons on these
weekly.
- Lastly, we give out CHIPS - since we are the
Navajo Buffalo's- recognizing positive behavior and actions using the Char.
Counts Traits. We call their name out and what they did over the TV
announcements every Friday morning to make them feel proud for following the
Character Counts traits...they also go to the office and receive a "goodie".
That is New from Navajo....where Kids for
Character learn each day !!
